Minutes of June 12, 2008

Friends of the Merrick Library

The meeting of the Friends of the Merrick Library was called to order at 4:30 p.m., June 12, 2008, in the Community room of the Merrick Library. Present were Lori & David Stayer, Felizia Bushkin, Marion Ormsten, Karen Tusa, Shirley Sherwin and Anne Reynolds.

The minutes of May 15, 2008 were read. Felizia moved and David seconded to accept the minutes as read. The motion was carried.

Marilyn Levine was not present to give the Treasurer's report.

Old Business

Lori read the price quote from JanWay for plastic bookmarks with a slot for receipts. The bookmarks would cost $1.93 each for 125, $1.14 for 250, and .68 each for 500. The initial quote of 60 cents per each for a quantity of 500 was incorrect, according to Wanda Bower, spokesperson for JanWay, whom Lori phoned.

The bookmarks offered are either clear plastic, or white glossy plastic, with one color imprint. Colors were discussed, but no samples were available. Shirley moved to approve the purchase of 500 bookmarks, white background with bright blue or purple lettering. Felizia seconded. The motion was carried.

Book Sale proceeds: $121 has been deposited from the book sale for the past four weeks.

A general discussion ensued over the dates of the big book sale in September. The group approved September 12, 13, 14, and 15 for the sale, pending availability of the Wing.

Maureen had emailed Lori that she checked into having a professionally prepared sign made up, but that it would cost $250. Rather than spending this amount, the Library will make up the signs. There is a sign made up by the library in pink and white, but it was agreed that it was too small and difficult to see.

Better World Books relayed information on how to address older books (First editions or rare books), by putting them to the attention of their Rare book editor.

Lori reported that Ellen Firer says the town of Hempstead Child Safety van doesn't get enough attention at the main library to warrant keeping the wing open an entire Wednesday to accommodate the van.

Lori asked if the Friends were in favor of shifting the meeting to Tuesday afternoons to meet in the Wing, but it was felt that Thursdays worked as well in the main library, and that we can use the smaller room when the community room is not available.

Marion Ormsten, program chairperson, will contact Bonnie, the Children’s librarian as to when the Children’s poetry class will be held again.

Lori reported that the Creative Writing class will begin Thursday, October 16 th at 1 p.m. The class is limited to fifteen registrants

New Business

Elections were held: The nominating committee, headed by Karen Tusa, read the slate of officers: President, Lori Stayer, Vice President, Karen Tusa, Secretary, Anne Reynolds, Treasurer, Shirley Sherwin. David moved that the slate be approved by acclamation. Felizia seconded it. The motion carried.

David said he would write an article with the new officers for Merrick Life.

Members will be invited to join the Friends or renew membership in August via email and snail mail. Our fiscal year begins in September.

Lori shared a thank you card sent to the Friends by Ellen Firer.

Karen suggested we form a committee to call members to find out if additional email addresses are in existence in order to make it simpler to send minutes.

Lori reported that Barbara Perlman’s brother has passed away, and a card was sent from the Friends.

The next meeting will be Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 4:30 p.m. in the main library.

inutes presented by Anne Reynolds and Lori Stayer.
