Registration Policy
Preference is given to
residents of the Merrick Union Free School District. Non-residents may register two weeks after the start of registration for Merrick residents if space allows. All programs are in the Multipurpose Room, unless otherwise indicated. Tickets, fees and any other conditions are noted in the individual
program descriptions. No phone registration, no refunds and no waiting lists.

A Musical Tribute to Mel Torme
presented by Warren Schein

Warren has been performing on stages from New York to LA for over two decades. He has played lead singing roles in many stock and Off Broadway
performances. Warren is also an actor and voice-over artist for TV and Radio. Come and listen to some of our favorite tunes originally performed by Mr. Torme. Tickets available August 10.
Come a Little Closer

The title song is a beautiful love song to a particular someone#but it is also a love song to New York. This show is about the arc of a
relationship (beginning, middle and end). Songs included are by Dorothy Fields, Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, Rogers and Hart and more. Tickets available September 14.
Salvatore Chiarelli
November 16
This very talented Tenor will serenade us with a variety of Italian and Broadway favorites. Mr. Chiarelli is a New York City native who has sung in opera, concert, television and radio in the US and Europe. We are delighted to have him perform for us. Join us for what is sure to be an entertaining afternoon. Tickets available October 19.

Exercise @ the Library
Jeanne McElwain, Registered Yoga Teacher continues her very popular YOGA classes. All sessions are 8 weeks long, they are 1 hour and 15 minutes in length. The cost for each session is $30.00. Checks only - payable to The Merrick Library.

TAG (Teen Advisory Group) We are looking for enthusiastic and creative TAG members. Want better teen programs and events at the library? Want to have a say in how things are run? THEN JOIN TAG! You will get free food and community service credit.

Feeling Good Club: Yoga Tuesdays, September 9, 16, 23, October 7, 14, 21, 28.7 sessions/$10 4:00-5:00 p.m.Yoga helps to improve your posture, reduce stress and increase strength. Enjoy relaxing classes with yoga instructor Maria Yakkey. Please bring your yoga matt to the class. Registration begins on August 5. Non-residents sign up starts on August 19.

SAT Preparation Workshop: Wednesdays, September 17, 24 and October 15, 22, 29. 6:45-8:45p.m. $80 per student/checks only
Learn tricks and techniques for taking the SATs. Enhance your math and verbal skills while learning test taking strategies that can help you get a higher score.
Registration begins on August 20. Non residents may sign up for the program on September 3.

College Application Essay: Thursday, September 18 6:30-8:30p.m. Fee $3
Though many students are taught how to write an essay through high school, their writing skills often need more polishing and fundamental reinforcement. Professor of English at Hofstra University, Peter O'Neill will help college-bound students hone better composition skills so they can create a distinctive and memorable personal statement for their college application. Professor O'Neill will provide participants of this workshop with a brief feedback on their essay via e-mail.
Registration begins on August 21. Non residents sign up starts on September 4.

10 Deadly Teen Driver Mistakes Thursday, October 16 7:00-8:00p.m. Free. Every year, traffic crashes claim more teenage lives than drugs, guns, suicide and AIDS combined. AAA New York offers to teens and their parents a presentation for NEW drivers on how to avoid deadly mistakes teen drivers make each and every day.
Registration begins August 30th.

Teen Chefs' Club: Our fall menu is all about light cool snacks! Join the club and learn how to make tomato bruscetta, caramel apples and spooky looking gingerbread houses!
Sign up for one or all three classes! Three classes for $10 or $5 per class. Registration begins on August 14. Non residents sign up starts on August 28.

Caramel Apples: Thursday, September 11 - 6:30-7:30p.m. With the help of the Baking Coach, each student will make an old time favorite healthy snack. Dip apples in melted caramel and cover with toppings.

Sweet Haunted House: Tuesday, October 28-6:30p.m.
Bakery owner, Gay Gagliano, will provide you with spiders and other spooky stuff and guide you on how to create a Sweet Haunted House.

Teen Holiday Snack Attack: Thursday, November 13-7:00p.m.
During this holiday season learn how to entertain like a pro! Chef Lee Perrotta will share with you tons of recipes and ideas on how to make the best appetizers ever!

Election 2008: What's at stake for Long Island, America and the World. Tuesday, October 21- 7:00 p.m.
Attention all students who are interested in learning everything about Election 2008. This is an evening not to be missed! Michael Libresco- D'Innocenzo, Professor of History at Hofstra University, will offer his insightful perspective on the upcoming election and the effects it will have on all of us. No registration necessary.

Music Video Production: Tuesday, November 18 and 25.-6:30-8:00p.m.
With the guidance of video producer Frank Cento, you can sing and dance your way to stardom. Everyone will receive a copy of his/her performance on DVD. Registration begins on October 14. Non residents sign up starts on November 4. $5 material fee.

Teen Movie Night: Vote in the Teen Room for the movie of your choice. Enjoy a light snack and the movie with your friends.

Computer Volunteers 9-12 Graders: We are accepting applications now for the fall volunteer's session. Volunteers will provide patrons with basic computer assistance in the Reference Area. Volunteers must be available for at least one hour a week: Monday to Friday 4:00-5:00p.m. Applications are available at the Reference Desk.

Children fall into fun activities this autumn

TOTS NIGHT OUT: Thursday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. for
families with children age 18 months-5 years. All will enjoy one hour of activities, music and a craft. Registration begins September 4.

R.E.A.D.: READING EDUCATION ASSISTANCE DOGS: Read to our special guest, Mugsy, a Portuguese Waterdog. Children in grades 2-4 are invited to sign-up for a 20 minute
session of reading books to Mugsy. While Mugsy gets to hear favorite stories, the children are actually improving their
reading and communication skills. Mugsy is specially trained by a R.E.A.D. member and
handler. Sessions will be held on Saturdays, October 4, November 1 and December 6 from 11-1:30 p.m. Come to the Children's Room beginning September 17 to set up your preferred day and time.

MUSICAL MOPPETS: October 8, 15, 22 at 12:30-1:00 p.m. babies age 3-17 months can sing, rhyme and laugh with Molly Moppet Mouse. Toddlers age 18-48 months will have fun singing, rhyming and marching at 1:15 p.m. Registration begins September 24.

POETRY WORKSHOP: Children in grades 3-6 are invited to join our POETRY WORKSHOP led by Susan Astor. The 4-week workshop will be held Friday
afternoons from 4-5 p.m. on October 17 & 24 and November 7 & 14, with a reading and reception on November 21. Ms. Astor will guide the children in discovering a new way to express themselves and have fun with poetry. At the conclusion of the workshop, participant's poems will be compiled into a booklet to take home. You must be able to attend all sessions. Please register beginning September 24 by coming into the Children's Room. This is sure to be wonderful experience!

FRUIT & VEGETABLE ART: Thursday, October 16 at 4:00 p.m. for children in grades 4-6. Learn to shape fruits and vegetables into animals, funny faces, or other imaginative items! Create an edible masterpiece! Registration begins October 2.

PUMPKIN ART: Saturday, October 25 at 11:00 a.m., children in grades 4-6 will learn how to paint a face on their pumpkin and also learn some cartooning
techniques. Please bring a
pumpkin to the program. Registration begins October 15.

3-D HAUNTED HOUSE: Thursday, October 30 at 4:00 p.m. for grades K-3. Children will design and create a haunted house suitable for display. Simple refreshments will be available. Register beginning October 15.

PLAY IS LEARNING & LEARNING IS PLAY: Sunday, November 2 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. In
collaboration with the Parenting Resource Network, families with children up to age 5 years will
experience first hand how simple play materials can be used to support skill development in young children. Various activity stations will be set up for kids and parents to explore while parents discover how
children actually learn by playing. No registration necessary; held in multi-purpose room.

Fall Bus Trip
Wednesday, October 22 ? Connecticut Cruise
The bus leaves from the Mar Thoma parking lot at 8 a.m. sharp. We will then take a 1 ? hour scenic cruise on the Connecticut River and enjoy the fall foliage. Lunch will be at the 200 year old Griswold Inn. After lunch we will stop and shop at the very popular Christmas Tree Shop-Don't you just love a bargain? Don't be fooled by the name-you'll find great bargains on almost all of your household needs. We will arrive back in Merrick approximately 7:30 p.m.. The cost of the trip is $76.00, please make checks only payable to Merrick Library. Registration begins September 3.

Computer help for adults: Our knowledgeable teen computer volunteers will be available
to help you with basic computer related questions Monday to Friday from 4:00-5:00p.m.

Stan Newman will be here to give us the in and outs of this craze called Sudoku. He will review basic rules and solving secrets for the popular "1-to-9" number puzzles. Practice with actual puzzles. Stay for a question and answer session, learn internet resources for advanced techniques and unlimited free puzzles. No registration necessary.

Three Step Apple Crisp
A chef from Baking Coach will be here to assist all you budding bakers. Each of you will create a simple delicious apple crisp at the library and then bring it home to bake. There is a $5.00 fee for this program. Registration begins August 7.

Russian American Night
Bring your family to meet the other Russian American families who live in Merrick.

Baseball in '41
This most exciting year in baseball includes the memorable exploits of Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and the Brooklyn Dodgers, who won the National League pennant for the first time in 21 years, having come from decades of second division finales. Baseball in '41 has to go down as one of the most amazing years in sports history.
Historian Bud Livingston will share his vast
knowledge in a lighthearted funny lecture.

Itzchack Tarkay Slide Show
Itzhak Tarkay of Israel is an artist of daring color, flowing lines and the female form. Tarkay depicts the teeming street life of Tel Aviv, the market places of Jaffa, the sidewalks of Paris and much more. We Care Blankets
We need caring people to join us for an evening of wrapping, knitting or crocheting blankets to donate to a child undergoing chemotherapy. Or just come to help wrap and find out more about this worthy organization. This is a non-profit organization that provides homemade blankets to hospitals such as Sloan Kettering, Winthrop, Schneider Children's Hospital and others in New York and New Jersey. All are welcome.

Merrick Librarians Kristine Dugan and Larissa Simonovski will teach you how to organize and create a beautiful album filled with memories. Lori Stayer leads this 8 session writing course. Each session will run two hours. Emilia Rabito Baer is back with this Lecture and hands-on workshop. Ms. Baer will teach you Mary Cassat's life, influences, themes and techniques. Flu Shot Registration
The County of Nassau Department of Senior Citizen Affairs will be sponsoring this one day only flu shot program. You must register ahead of time and please note there will be no out of pocket expense for any senior citizen (aged 60+) or his/her spouse. Registration will begin at the Reference Desk beginning October 27. You must sign up in person. THE FLU SHOTS WILL BE GIVEN ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 1 FROM 1-4:00 P.M.

Election 2008: What's at stake for Long Island, America and the World
This is an evening not to be missed! The Merrick library is very proud to welcome Michael Libresco-D'Innocenzo; Professor of History and The Harry Wachtel Distinguished Teaching Professor for the Study of Nonviolent Social Changes at Hofstra University. The Professor will offer his insightful perspective on the upcoming election and the effects it will have on all of us. All are welcome to attend. We encourage you to bring your teenagers along, they are the future of this country. No registration necessary.

Senior Rap Group
For the 55+ who have a lifetime of experience to share.The Library would like to start a monthly rap group for seniors. Everyone likes to express their own personal point of view. This will be a forum to discuss various topics that are interesting to you and to hear other people's thoughts. If this sounds like something you would like to be involved in, please join us. Bring your friends and some topics to discuss. Refreshments will be served.

Friends Book Sale
The Friends of the Merrick Library will host a book sale at the historic Merrick Library Wing from Sept. 12 to 15. A preview for the Friends will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 1:30-7:30, open only to members of the Friends of the Merrick Library. Membership forms will be available at the sale. Hours are: Friday, Saturday and Monday, 9/12, 9/13 and 9/15, noon to 6PM and Sunday, 9/14 1:30-5PM. Come and browse-there will be books for all tastes. You are sure to find something of interest.

A Haunting Study
of Ghosts
Just in time for Halloween we welcome back The Paranormal Adventurers, Joseph Flammer and Diane Hill, on a spooky journey back through time to find ghosts. Learn how the hauntings the Fox sisters experienced in rural upstate NY influenced Houdini and present day ghost hunters. They will show us ghostly photographs and videos from haunted locations across Long Island. We will travel to a haunted mansion in Massachussetts and more. No registration necessary.

Cinema Censorship: Sex, gangsters and the Hays Code
Sex and violence, as they impact morality, have been an issue since moving pictures hit the big screens. Movie historian, educator and performer Larry Strickler, presents an entertaining and enlightening multi media video exploration of films of the 1930's, so provocative that they brought out the morality police. No registration necessary.

The Twenty-Third
Mission
On July 7, 1944 Lt. Ted Weaver flew a B-24
liberator bomber named "Full House" into a fierce air battle over Bernberg, Germany to bomb an aircraft factory, It was his twenty-third mission. Full House was shot down and Ted was the only member of his crew not captured or killed. He made contact with the Dutch Underground who helped hide him for 9 months until Holland was liberated. Mr. Weaver's son Shaun will share the details of this amazing story with us. No registration necessary.

This workshop will provide you with the outlet to create hand made jewelry, using only the finest semi-precious stones, fresh water pearls and beautiful crystal pendants. Surprise your grandchildren. Learn how to play the Wii. Bowl, golf, even play a

The Merrick Library has joined with Overdrive and a host of other Nassau libraries to provide our patrons with downloadable audiobooks. After browsing the wide variety of audiobooks available, download one to your computer, transfer it to a portable device and you're ready to go! Where allowed by the publisher, a book may be burned to a CD to be enjoyed anywhere, anytime. View the list from the library*s homepage. Ask at the Reference desk for more details.
