Merrick Chorale in Concert - Sunday, June 12 @ 2:00 p.m.
We encourage you to come to hear songs people have loved listening to over the years. Bouncy tunes, romantic melodies, some jazzy, many heart-warming and uplifting.
The Merrick Chorale is celebrating thirty years of presenting concerts, both classical and popular music. This concert is being directed and accompanied on piano by Herbert Bradensten. Come join us for a lovely afternoon of choral singing. Tickets available at the Circulation Desk.

Homemade Dog Biscuits for Adults and Teens
Wednesday, August 3 @ 6:30 p.m.
(rescheduled from April)
The Baking Coach will be here to show us how to
make dog biscuits. We will make the dough and cut
out the biscuits and then take the treats home to bake. You can give them to your dog or if the teens need
community service hours they can donate the treats to our local animal shelter.
There is a $3.00 fee for this program. Cash only, no refunds. Registration begins June 29 at the Reference Desk.

We are offering this great new reader’s advisory service to help you pick your next book to read. Simply visit our homepage and fill out the questionnaire to help us get an idea of your reading preferences. Our reference staff will choose up to 5 books that you might enjoy and contact you when they are ready to pick up at the reference desk!

This is a sampling of programs; the Children’s Newsletter, available in the Children’s Room or on-line, contains a complete listing of all children’s programs.
Sign-up for summer reading begins on June 22 and is on-going. We will be offering 3 groups:
Wee Wanderers: for babies age 12-35 months. Read and do activities with your baby; come to the library to record them and get prizes for your little one
Island Hoppers: a read-to-me program for ages 3-6 years; read at home and record your titles in the library; children pick prizes after 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 & 30 books
Globetrotters: for children entering grades 2-7; after reading a book, record your title at the library; fill in a summary slip, use the
question board or tell about the book. Pick your own prize from our Travel Steamer Trunk!

POST CARD CONTEST! Open to all Merrick
children. Send the library a post card this summer from anywhere you travel. The card coming from the furthest point will win a prize.
One World, Lots of Fun
• JUMP FOR JOY: Wednesday, June 8 at 10:30 am for tots age 18-48 months and
caregivers. Explore dress-up, music, dance, games and more. Register beginning May 31.
• FATHER’S DAY STORY/CRAFT: Thursday, June 16 at 10:30 am for
children age 3-5 years. Children attend alone, and will hear some stories for Father’s Day and create a special gift. Registration begins June 6.
• MINI PLUSHES: Tuesday, June 28 at 1:30 pm for children who will be entering grades 1-6 in September. Stuff and dress a small plush animal. Fill out a “birth certificate” and take it home! Registration begins June 17.
One World, Lots of Food
• HOT-AIR BALLOON CAKE: Wednesday, July 6 at 2:00 pm for children entering grades 3-6 in September. They will
create a hot air balloon cake using butter cream, sprinkles, licorice and more! Registration begins June 27.
• INTERNATIONAL TREATS: Mondays, July 11, 25 & August 8 at 7:00 pm. Children entering grades 4-6 will be taught by Chef Robert how to cook an Italian, Asian and Latin dish. Everything will be provided, just bring an appetite! Registration for this delicious series of cooking nights begins July 1.
One World, Many Pajamas
• Pajama Storytimes: Each Wednesday evening from 7:00-7:30 pm, children age 3 ½-6 will enjoy stories, fingerplays, and quiet activities. Register the Monday before the Wednesday pajama night. First session will be July 6 and registration begins July 5 (library closed July 4).
One World, Many Movies
• SHORT FILMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD: Mondays, July 11 & August 8 at 2:00 pm for children age 4 & up (accompanied by a caregiver). Watch Mickey Mouse and his friends as they star in tales from around the world.
• MADELINE LOST IN PARIS: Tuesday, July 19 at 7:00 pm for families with children age 4 & up. Join Madeline, Miss Clavel and 11 school friends in a thrilling Paris adventure. Includes 5 new songs! No registration needed; held in multi-purpose room.
One World, Many Family Nights
• FUNN MAGIC: Thursday, July 7 at 7:00 pm, David Funn will present a program featuring magic and stories from around the world. Tweek, the rabbit, is scheduled to appear. Lots of audience participation. No registration needed; held in multi-purpose room.
• FAMILY PHOTO GLOBE: Tuesday, July 26 at 7:00 pm, families with children age 5 & up will create a globe with spots for favorite photos. Please bring 5-8 color copies of photos. Each family will make ONE globe. Registration begins July 15; held in multi-purpose room B.
• FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT: Tuesday, July 19 at 7:00 pm. See above for details.
A World of Chess: Thursdays, July 21, 28, August 4 & 11 at 7:00pm. Children entering grades 1-6 will enjoy an hour of chess. Seasoned players as well as beginners are invited to register beginning July 7. Class size is limited to 20.
• DROP IN CRAFTS: Each Tuesday afternoon from 2:00-4:00 pm, children are invited to stop by the children’s room and visit the craft table. Materials will be available to create a craft. No registration needed; 1st craft Tuesday is July 5; last craft Tuesday will be August 9.
• BOOK BUDDIES: Teen volunteers will be available Thursday afternoons from 4:00-5:30 pm to read one-on-one to young children. Please stop by.

The Children’s Room offers more than just books! Stop in to explore CD-ROM games, a large collection of magazines, our multi-cultural section, audio books and our flash cards collection. All may be checked out with a library card. Program registration policy: preference is given to residents of the Merrick School District. Proof of residency is required. Non residents may call the night before a program to check on availability.

Kids have a summer reading program. Teens do, too.
All adults are invited to participate in our inaugural summer reading program which is sure to be a lot of fun! As our theme implies, you will be asked to read books of an
international nature – books by authors from other cultures, books set in other countries or books in translation. Suggested titles will be displayed near the Reference desk. Our journey begins Memorial Day and lasts until Labor Day. We’ll have raffles, prizes and an end of summer gathering! Registration for Merrick residents begins May 10 at the Reference Desk.

Our Summer Reading Club opens its door to teens early this year: registration for the club begins on June 1st.
Once registered for the SRC, you’ll read books and submit book reviews at the Teen Media desk. For each
submitted book review, you’ll receive a prize and will enter our Weekly Raffle. Last year, teens like you submitted 157 book reviews! This year, let’s try to get to 200! At the end of the summer, all participants of the Summer Reading Club will be eligible to win the Grand Summer Raffle!

Upcoming Bus Trips
A Day in the Hamptons
Wednesday, August 31
Join us for a beautiful day in the Hamptons. We will begin the day with a visit to the Hampton Classic Horse Show, followed by time on your own in East Hampton to peruse the streets and have lunch on your own. We will then meet back on the bus for a stop at Briermere Farms. The cost of this trip is $22.00. Checks only-payable to the Merrick Library. Registration begins July 6, space is limited, so sign up early.
The Bronx
Wednesday, September 21
This trip is still in the works. We are planning a trip to the Bronx Museum of Art. We will then have a guide join us on the bus for a tour of the Bronx. Then, time on your own in the Italian neighborhood of Arthur Avenue for shopping and delicious eating!. More info to follow. Registration begins August 10.

Vibrational Sound Workshop

A powerful class that focuses on balancing the chakras utilizing tuning forks, releasing blocked energy and tuning the spine with healing instruments such as Crystal Bowls, Tibetan Singing Bowls, chimes, rain sticks, vibratone, Gong, and drum from Indigenous cultures .
Melodee Gabler, Vibrational Sound Healer & Richie Caruso, both certified yoga instructors for over 20 years. Registration has begun for all 3 sessions (sign up for each individual session). There is no fee for this program.
Crocheted Afghan
Monday, June 13, 20 & 27, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
If you know the basics of crochet and would like to learn more stitches and techniques, so you can make a crocheted afghan, this is the class for you. We will make samples in order to learn new techniques, then design and plan an afghan. The final class will be spent
learning finishing techniques, how to connect granny squares as well as decorative edges and borders. A materials list will be supplied at registration, which has begun at the Reference Desk. Check for openings. There is a $3.00 fee for this class.
America’s Boating Class
Tuesday, June 14, 21, 28, July 5 & 12,
6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
This course covers boat handling under
normal and adverse conditions, rules of the road (water), compass and chart (map)
familiarization, running lights and equipment, trailering, piloting navigation, personal watercraft (jet-ski) Federal and NY State regulations. A written examination indicating successful completion entitles you to a U. S. Power Squadron Certificate required by law to
operate a personal watercraft and is usually honored by insurance companies for a discount. The fee for the text book and material is $45.00. Registration has begun-check

Infant/Child CPR
Thursday, June 16-6:00-9:00 p.m.
Infants and young children are at a high risk for choking, a major preventable cause of death in children. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes while waiting for an ambulance to arrive can save lives. Lori Green RN, a certified CPR instructor conducts this 3 hour workshop. Certification is received upon completion of this workshop. There is a $35.00 fee for this class. Registration has begun-check for openings. Checks only.
St. Francis Hospital Community Outreach Bus
Tuesday, June 21, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
FREE HEALTH SCREENING. The screenings include a brief cardiac history, blood pressure, simple blood test for cholesterol, and diabetes screenings with appropriate patient education and referrals as needed for clients above the age of 18. No appointment necessary. The van will be located in the parking lot on Narwood Ave. across from the Library.

We Care Blankets
Wednesday, July 6 @ 6:45 p.m.
until completion when all blankets are wrapped, therefore time will vary. We need caring adults to join us for an evening of wrapping blankets to donate to a child undergoing chemotherapy. We invite young people,
students and Girl Scouts over the age of 7, who require community service credit. Letters of community service will be provided upon completion of the evening’s wrap. Adult
supervision is now required for youngsters who come to our wrap night events for safety reasons. Please join us to learn more about this worthy organization and how you can be of help to them. Their website is www.wecareblankets.org and they are a non-profit organization that provides homemade blankets to hospitals such as Sloan Kettering, Winthrop, L.I.J Schneider’s Children’s Hospital and others in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and other areas.
Belly Dancing
Mondays, July 11, 18, 25, August 1 & 8, 7:00-8:15 p.m.
Belly Dance (also known as Raks Sharqui, Arabic for “dance of the east”) is an ancient, mystical, and healing dance. It is a time
treasured dance, exploring and positively developing the feminine essence. All levels of dance are welcome and if you have never delved into any form of dance, we especially encourage you to come. This workshop will explore the history, basic movements and healing aspects of Belly Dance.
What you will need:
Positive attitude and an open mind!
Clothing should be comfortable (i.e. Yoga pants, leggings, free flowing skirt), a mid drift top or sports bra is preferred but not required, and a hip scarf and/or coin belt. Dance slippers are optional. Bottled water is suggested.

Thomas Germano an Associate Professor of Art, teaching Painting, Drawing and Art History at Farmingdale State College, State University of New York. He also teaches at the New York Academy of Art Graduate School will be here with his lecture on Leonardo DaVinci. All are welcome to attend.
Computer 1st Grade for Grown Ups

Come join our slide presentation as we travel around Ireland. From Dublin, travel along the beautiful Antrim Coast into Northern Ireland to visit Belfast and Londonderry. We will tour Southern Ireland and visit the Connemara coastline with Galway and its lovely bay. We'll travel coast to coast and finish our tour where Irish culture began-the Rock of Cashel, where King Angus was converted to Christianity by St. Patrick. All are welcome to attend.

bangles and beads, take an exciting tour of the wonderful world of antique, vintage and collectible adornment. This PowerPoint-illustrated lecture covers the decades from 1860 to 1969, highlighting the historic, societal, economic and political influences in each period, from the somber reign of Queen Victoria through the
sizzling sixties presided over by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. With the price of gold and silver skyrocketing, who knows…maybe that box of junk jewelry you found in the attic isn’t junk after all! Jessica Ley has been a dealer in antique and vintage jewelry for 25 years, and holds a certificate in Fine Arts Appraisal from New York University. Bring along one item of jewelry-the first 20 people will get a verbal evaluation. No registration necessary, all are welcome to attend.

Have you ever wanted to join a Mah Jongg game but didn’t know how? Here’s your chance! Through simple, step-by-step instructions and enjoyable activities, you’ll comfortably learn the basics. Within only five lessons, you will gain the skills needed to play confidently with others!
